The Last Bastion of the Living Blog Tour: Interview with cover artist Claudia McKinney and Giveaway with Rhiannon Frater

Welcome my fellow Vagabonds, this is an absolute first for me. This is my first interview with a cover artist. I am super excited. So today I have with me today Claudia McKinney, cover artist for Rhiannon Frater's The Last Bastion of the Living. I saw the cover and I just had to know more. So please join me and find out how Claudia comes up with such beautiful images and how you can win an ebook copy of The Last Bastion of the Living.

Let's get this started :)

OBVB: Hello Claudia! Welcome to Offbeat Vagabond.

CM: Hi Diana,Thanks for the awesome invitation to be a part of your blog! I'm honored.

OBVB: I have visited you site, Phat Puppy Art, and so much beautiful artwork. Do you have any personal favorites?

CM: I admit, I do have a few...the one closest to my heart is Lucia's Walk to Heaven because it is a personal representation of my great-grandmother,  Lucia, as she tries to find her way to heaven - looking for her husband, Angelo, to make sure she is on the right path. :)

"Lucia's Walk to Heaven"

OBVB: Where do you get your inspirations from?

CM: Everything around me really - a lot from nature and whatever I feel God is leading me to do.  :)

OBVB: What is the usual process when creating a book cover? Do you sketch it out first or do you use the computer?

CM: Everything for me is done on the  monitor is a giant tablet that I paint directly on... so it always starts there.

"First Summer Love"

OBVB: When creating a book cover, what do you focus on first to get started: a description of the character or the setting of the book?

CM: Believe it or not, I don't like TOO MUCH information  - but rather a general feeling for the story/character and then I build from there.

OBVB: What got you into creating art in the first place?

CM: When my daughter was going to sign with a major music label we had done a photoshoot and video and I was learning how to manipulate images for her Myspace page = that was about seven years ago! :)

OBVB: What inspired the cover for Rhiannon Frater’s The Last Bastion of the Living?
CM: I wanted something female and bad a** -- something that showed a fantasy like setting with a strong female character.....

OBVB: By any chance do you have a calendar? If so, where can I get it?

CM: Funny you should ask - but I'll be putting one together in the very near future... probably by September or so it should be ready - but I may not release it until November....

OBVB: Is there anything you absolutely need or need to do when creating your work?

CM: Yes, coffee and good music - my two favorites are Danny Elfman and Gregorian Chant --
I also love any kind of flamenco guitar, Irish music and definitely more "off the wall" sounds. lol
OBVB: Last but not least, are there any projects coming up that you could tell us about?
CM: I have a lot of projects that I'm working on - one is with a major publisher and cards... using over 70 different pieces of my current work. :)
I also freelance with movie studios for film projects creating storyboards for films in pre-production. :)

"Learning to Fly"

OBVB: Thanks for visiting Offbeat Vagabond hon. Hope you have you here again :)
CM: No, thank YOU for inviting me -- this was fun!  Keep up the awesome work.

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
