Interview + Review + Amazon GC/Swag Giveaway: Breaking the Nexus (Mythrian Realm #1) by Lindsay Avalon

Tour schedule and more here: Bewitching Book Tours

Hello Vagabonds! Please give a warm welcome to author Lindsay Avalon. She is a new author promoting her first book, Breaking The Nexus. She is here to talk about herself and her new book. Avalon also has gift card and swag giveaways set for you guys, so read on to find out more. Enjoy!

OBVB: Thank you so much for dropping by today Lindsay, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

LA: I’m a hyper, slightly crazy lover of books, all things adorable, and of course duckies. I’m a programmer by day, writer by night, though sometimes by day if I’m sneaking in some covert writing  I adore crafts, especially crochet and making sock monkeys, and playing video games. I’ve been with the love of my life for over eight and a half years (though only married for one and a half) and he’s my biggest supporter. As soon as I dove into the world of indie authors I knew I’d found my true calling: to be an author. Now the only question is how quickly can I make this my full time job 

OBVB: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

LA: My sister bugged me to do NaNoWriMo with her and I finally caved, mainly to shut her up. The first attempt I only wrote about 14k before getting hopelessly lost. The next year, my husband gave me the best advice ever: write what you love to read. That’s when I began Breaking the Nexus, a paranormal romance. That was the best advice ever because this time the words just flew out and I ended up winning NaNo with 50k words written, though the book itself wasn’t finished. The story wouldn’t leave me alone and I finally decided to try to self-publish. When I dove into the indie world, I knew I’d found what I’d been missing in my day job. Writing is what I’m meant to do.

OBVB: What first attracted you to Paranormal Romance? Any others that influenced you along the way?

LA: I love the idea of magic and breaking the rules. Paranormal romance can explore things relegated to the impossible like demons walking among humans, people who can change their shape into beasts, and so much more. I adore reading paranormal romance and when my husband suggested I write what I love to read, he proved just how brilliant he is. I’m also influenced by romantic suspense since I prefer my books to have plenty of action mixed with the drama.

OBVB: What was the most challenging thing about getting published?

LA: Since I self-published, the actual process wasn’t too difficult once I got over the fear of putting my work out there for all to read. The biggest challenge has been marketing and promoting myself and finding time to write. I work full time so sometimes it’s hard to find the time to write but I do my best.

OBVB: Breaking the Nexus is your first novel, yes? Can you tell us what the book is about?

LA: Yes, it is my first novel, although I did write a novella in an anthology titled Once Upon A Twisted Time that was released Oct 31, 2012. Breaking the Nexus is the first in my Mythrian Realm series and I’m currently working on a novella that will be released very soon. Book 2 will hopefully be out this summer!

Throughout history, myths and legends of extraordinary creatures have been told and retold. Fantastic tales of demons and banshees, gryphons and dragons, and of course, magic. Stories that every child grows to learn are nothing more than fantasy…or are they?

Beyond the world you see lies a hidden realm, the Mythrian Realm, inhabited by all of the creatures you’ve been told are mere fiction. Only one thing lies between humans and the truth: the Nexus. A magical barrier erected millennia ago to separate the two realms, it has stood the test of time. Until now.

For Mythrian Sha Phoenix, magic is nothing new. But when she stumbles upon a portal on the verge of collapse, her fate will forever change. Pulled through the portal into the Human Realm, she lands in the middle of Detective Connor Flynn’s brutal murder scene. Soon it is obvious someone is using blood magic to try to bring down the Nexus. Together, Connor and Sha must work to unravel the secrets before the barrier falls and the realms collide.

The Nexus is breaking and all hell is about to unleash…literally.

OBVB: The world you built in Breaking the Nexus is amazing, where did you get the idea?

LA: Mostly from my imagination  I combined two things I new a bit about: mythologies and Denver. My sister lives in Denver and I fell in love with the city when I visited her. I knew it would be the perfect setting in the Human Realm. As for the Mythrian Realm, I’ve always had daydreams about a world where myths blended into reality and you’ll get to see even more of Mythria in the upcoming books.

OBVB: Do you have any muses you used for this book?

LA: My husband helped inspire me as well as my beta readers, in particular one special lady named Carrie Fort. She’s my official muse and is the first to read all new content as I write it. She helps get me past writer’s block so well. My other betas are also phenomenal and know how to ask the right questions to get my writing juju flowing.

OBVB: What genre would you like to write that isn't your own and why?

LA: I’ve been thinking about a pure romantic suspense because that’s my other favorite genre. I’m also thinking about writing a Western because I’m a little bit obsessed with cowboys :D

OBVB: I know, like most authors, you are a huge booklover. What are your top 5 favorites?

LA: Oh man, I don’t know if I can pick just 5!! Umm… Kiss of Snow, Branded by Fire, anything by Sharon Sala (yes I cheated lol), Acheron, and the Lords of the Underworld series (yes I cheated again  )

OBVB: Is there anything you must have or do when you start writing?

LA: I must have epic music playing or I can’t focus worth a damn lol.

OBVB: Last but not least, are there any other projects you are working on right now? Can you tell us anything about Waking the Phoenix, the sequel to Breaking the Nexus?

LA: I’m working on two projects right now. First will be a novella releasing very soon called Warrior Unleashed which features panther Chimerae (shifter) Achaius, Sha’s half-brother. Here’s the blurb for that:

When Sentinels begin dying under mysterious circumstances, the deaths are believed to be unrelated. Only one man sees the truth: an unknown enemy is targeting the elite group of warriors and no one is safe. As a panther Chimerae, Achaius Rilke recognizes the signs of an unpredictable predator. The only person he can trust is Saia Makan, the tempestuous Sorceri he has chased from afar. But when the killer has set his sights on Saia, Achaius faces the hunt of his life.

Book 2 of the trilogy featuring Sha and Connor, Waking the Phoenix, will hopefully be out this summer. Here’s the blurb for that:

As the Nexus continues to break down, evil threatens the Mythrian and Human Realms. Millennia ago, only the sacrifice of the Great Phoenix was enough to imprison Ferren, a blood mage with the power to destroy the Human Realm. When the Nexus falls, his prison will shatter and he will be free to walk the earth once more, leaving a path of destruction in his wake.

Chaos engulfs the Mythrian and Human Realms as Ferren fights to escape his prison. Connor and Sha must race against time to find the last of the phoenixes before all is lost. There’s just one problem: the phoenixes have lain dormant for thousands of years. Can they stay alive long enough to save their world?

The key to saving the Realms lies in waking the phoenix.

OBVB: Thank you so much for having me on your tour Lindsay and thank you for visiting. I hope to have you here again soon.

LA: Thank you so much for having me! It has been a pleasure!!

About Lindsay Avalon

I am a wife, a programmer, and now an author. I have an adorable mini Schnauzer and more books than I have room for. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. The day I met my husband was the day I truly began believing in happily ever after. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had “nothing” to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.

My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. My debut novel, Breaking the Nexus started as a book written for NaNoWriMo and has grown to so much more. It was the conduit that introduced me to a fantastic group of independent authors who have changed my life in unimaginable ways.

When I’m not writing, I’ve found a passion for blogging and interviewing fellow authors. I also love reading (of course!), baking, crochet, sewing sock monkeys, playing video games, and all sorts of random crafts. I have an incurable love of rubber duckies and stuffed animals, and I believe nobody should have to grow up if they don’t want.

*** Breaking the Nexus is finally here!! The story continues in book 2, Waking the Phoenix, coming in Spring 2013! ***

Throughout history, myths and legends of extraordinary creatures have been told and retold. Fantastic tales of demons and banshees, gryphons and dragons, and of course, magic. Stories that every child grows to learn are nothing more than fantasy…or are they?

**********

Breaking the Nexus follows a woman named Sha who lives in a different realm known as Mythria. All the creatures we believe are just mythical fairy tales all live in Mythria. Sha is one of the warriors in Mythria that protects the Nexus. The Nexus is what separates Mythria from the Human Realm. But there are gates or weak spots that have been created that let those creatures through into our world. Sha senses an even bigger problem, someone has been using very dangerous magic and before she knows what it is, she is thrown into the Human Realm. If that weren't bad enough, she lands right in the middle of a crime scene, which makes her the number one suspect. The detective, Connor, doesn't believe she is the killer they have been hunting, but gets the feeling she may be able to help find who did it. He thinks she is nuts due to her talk of magic and different realms, but soon finds out that she isn't crazy as she seemed. The things humans have never thought existed are coming through the cracks quickly and they must hurry to find the culprit before all hell breaks loose.

Holy crap was this book awesome. Everything I could ask for was in this book. Add this to your TBR list. You will not regret it. I loved our heroine Sha. She was quite the badass in this book. I loved how nothing phased her. Or at least she didn't let it show that nothing phased her. She could go up against the baddest of the bad and keep her cool. I loved that. Connor was a great lead as well. And sexy as hell. I loved the attraction between him and Sha. The both had me cracking up. I loved the banter between them. From the get go, you can tell they will really suit each other even though Connor has to fight it. She is a witness after all and it isn't a great idea to have the hots for someone whose case you are investigating. I also enjoyed Connor's partner, Ian. I loved how close they were. They were like brothers. I also want to know more about Alec. I knew there was something about him, but now I am very curious.

I loved the world Avalon created. I like the idea of everything we think isn't real is just out of our reach. It was scary thinking that someone wants to break the Nexus because they hate humans so much. Someone is using blood magic, the most dangerous magic, to weaken the Nexus. Once it is unleashed, the creatures are the least of the humans worries. There is something bigger that wants to get out and it has been trapped for a very, very long time. The only thing strong enough to kill it has been killed and are exceptionally rare to find.

I loved this book a lot. I loved the connection between Connor and Sha. They were incredible. They scenes together had me smiling one second and sweating the next. The story is epic and I can't wait for the sequel especially with that ending. Oh my goodness! Left my mouth hanging open. I want more now. It is quite dark in parts, just saying for those who are squeamish. It was pretty disturbing. This was a very exciting read. I was on edge trying to uncover the mystery of it all. Highly recommended for PNR and UF fans. I will be front row and center for the sequel and you will be too.

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
