Read Along + Review + Giveaway: Death Comes Home (In Darkness We Must Abide #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Read-Along posted @  Parajunkee

Episode 1: Death Comes Home

1) For the chapter prologue: What does everyone think of Armando? It's clear that Vanora has a reaction to him.
Vanora has quite the reaction to Armando. Whatever it is, it has caused her to run away from her home. I am dying to know whether it was for a good reason or not. She could be in love him, but he may be of questionable character.
2) First impressions of the Socoli's. What do we think of them as a family? As individuals?
I love this family. You can tell they are very close and that they really love each other. Roman is a great older brother. Although, he really should learn to listen to his sister. I loved Alisha in this book. She is the only one that felt the trouble brewing when Roman decided to bring their dead relatives to Houston. I honestly would have slapped him. I absolutely loved Vanora. She was a fun kid. I loved her obsessions with monster movies and her zombie walk. She was my favorite.
3) What was your most spine chilling moment?
Oh good question. I loved the scene where Alisha first meets the vampire and it says it plans to take her to make her his wife. I also was crept out during the end with Roman. The part imagining the vampire climbing up the house like a spider definitely sent chills up my spine. So creepy.
4) If a vampire were trying to break into your house, would you risk leaving the safe room to check on loved ones, or use the phone like in the story?
I would leave my room to check on my family while dialing the police. This is why wireless phones were invented.
6) In the story Vanora says "It's kind of cool that monsters are real, but I don't like this monster." Would you be excited/scared like Vanora is at finding out that monsters are real, or would you be scared/scared? (TBH I'd like to think I would be excited/scared, but really I'd be terrified.)
I would be excited/scared really. It would be cool, but I would hope to meet one that wasn't like this one. That is for sure.
7) Oh cliffhanger? Are you completely hooked? Were you mad it ended like that?
I was very hooked. I was mad that is where it ended, but that is the way it works with cliffhangers LOL! But I love it even though it had me reeling. Can't wait for next week.

Synopsis from Goodreads
In Darkness We Must Abide is the epic saga of one young woman caught in the dangerous world of the creatures of the night.

Already living in the shadows due to her albinism, Vanora is just a little girl when her older brother inadvertently unleashes a terrible evil from the family crypt that changes their lives forever.

As she grows up in a world where beautiful deadly beings hunt by night, one captures her eye and her heart. Yet, can she trust the mysterious Armando? For there is a powerful entity plotting to claim her when she reaches adulthood in order to fulfill an ancient prophecy, and her enemy has enveloped her in a web of deceit, casting doubt on all she believes to be true. Soon, she will have to fight not only to save those she loves, but also for her very soul.

Rhiannon Frater delivers a chilling adventure once again with this multi-part epic serial with a dynamic cast, old school vampires, bloody action, a smoldering forbidden love, and a terrifying villain set against the backdrop of a modern day vampire war.

Each episode will be between 10,000 and 20,000 words with new installments being published every 2 to 3 weeks.

Episode 1: Death Comes Home
Roman Socoli inadvertently releases a terrible evil when he has his Romanian ancestors entombed on his estate in Houston, Texas.

Rhiannon Frater is back again with a great new horror read. This time we are getting a serial. We follow the Socoli family; Roman, Alisha and Verona. They are siblings who live together and pretty much help raise each other. Roman has made a decision to move dead members of the Socoli family from Romania to their home in Texas. The Socoli Family belong in Texas. But things are a bit strange when of the coffins is actually wrapped in silver chains. Roman brushes it off as silly Romanian paranoia. But Alisha, Roman's sister, feels there is a reason for the chains. Alisha knows something is wrong and so does Varona, the youngest sister. Varona is fascinated with monsters, but it doesn't seem that this is one she wants to know. Roman has brought something to their home that they have no idea how to face and may very well destroy them all.

I loved this short story a lot. Frater has once again given us something worth diving into. I love the dynamic between this family. Varona is albino and can't stay in the sun for too long. She gets made fun of and called weird due to her appearance. But she doesn't let that faze. She was a lot of fun and energetic. She was my favorite. Alisha was the first to understand that something was wrong. She is independent and stands on her own. Roman and her butt heads a lot because you can tell they are quite stubborn. But they love each other.

The story was quick, but I liked it. Such a simple and nice gesture that turns into something awful. It is nice that Roman wants their ancestors to be in their hometown. But I know would have been suspicious of those chains. He doesn't heed any of Alisha's warnings especially after her and Varona have an encounter with the thing. Not to mention, it seems that Alisha and Varona have a special ability that let them know something was really wrong.

I am such a big Rhiannon Frater fan. She may write a lot of paranormal books, but you can relate to them because everyone feels human.Well besides the main villain anyway. Even when we have a villain, they are really scary. I love that her vampires are old school vamps, they are absolutely terrifying, very Anne Rice-like. I can't wait to read the next serial. Frater killed me with that cliffhanger. This is a whole lot of awesome packed in a small package. Pick it up.

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
