Tristan's Lyceum Wolves Book Tour - Interview + Giveaway with Kym Grosso, author of the Immortals of New Orleans series

OBVB: Welcome to Offbeat Vagabond, Kym! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

KG: Thanks so much for hosting me on my virtual book tour for my new release, Tristan’s Lyceum Wolves.  I really appreciate the opportunity to do an author interview.  It is great to be here with you and your readers!

I am the author of the erotic paranormal romance series, The Immortals of New Orleans. The series currently includes Kade's Dark Embrace (Immortals of New Orleans, Book 1), Luca's Magic Embrace (Immortals of New Orleans, Book 2) and Tristan's Lyceum Wolves (Immortals of New Orleans, Book 3).

In addition to romance, I’ve written and published several articles about autism, and I am passionate about autism advocacy.  I write autism articles on PsychologyToday.com and AutismInRealLife.com.  I’m also honored to be a contributing essay author in new release, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Kids on the Spectrum.

OBVB: When did you discover your love for writing?

KG: In 2008, I created my own website, www.AutismInRealLife.com, where I started writing and publishing articles about autism.  My son was diagnosed with autism in 1999, and I wanted to share my family’s experiences with other parents, families and professionals.  After publishing a few articles in Autism magazines, I wanted to publish an article on Autism and Divorce.  In my searching for a place to publish, I was offered a chance to write for PsychologyToday.com.  It has been a wonderful place to write about autism, and I write there now.

As far as writing romance, I actually started to write a book about autism, but I seemed to have a block on where to go with it.  I love, love, love reading paranormal romances.  So I just decided one day that I wanted to write a paranormal romance, and I created Kade’s Dark Embrace, which was published in March 2012.  Fast forward a year and I’m now releasing Tristan’s book.

OBVB: What first attracted you to Paranormal Romance?

KG: There is just something magical about leaving the reality of real life and being able to write about anything you want.  In a paranormal romance, characters are open to all kinds of experiences that are only limited by the author’s imagination.  They have supernatural gifts and talents, and the rules of game can be anything you want them to be.  And of course, there is nothing sexier than a hot alpha male vampire…well, except for, perhaps, a hot alpha male wolf.

OBVB: What authors influenced you when growing? Do you have any current favorites?

KG: There are so many great authors out there; it’s difficult to pick just one.  If I had to narrow it down, I would say JR Ward.  Her stories literally pull you in and won’t let you go.  I can remember reading all of her books over the course of a month, one after another, and thinking, ‘this should be an HBO series’.  I literally was up all night reading her books.  She creates a new world in which there are traditions, culture and intrigue that is so realistic, you feel you are there in their world.  You find yourself emotionally tied to fictitious characters because her writing makes you feel like they are real people.

OBVB: Tristan's Lyceum Wolves is your latest release, can you tell you use what it is about?

KG: Tristan’s Lyceum Wolves is the third book in the Immortals of New Orleans series and is an erotic paranormal romance.  At the end of Luca’s Magic Embrace, the charismatic and powerful Lyceum Wolves' Alpha, Tristan Livingston, endures an attack on his pack.  His nightclub is set ablaze, and he’s crushed in a building collapse.  In a show of strength, not only does Tristan survive it, he orchestrates the rebuild of his chic, state-of-the-art nightclub within a week. In his quest to mete out justice, he rescues a beautiful witness who may be the key to helping him find the perpetrators.

Dr. Kalli Williams, dedicated veterinarian, is hiding a secret that endangers not only her own life but the lives of wolves across the country. After being tortured by a savage vampire, she's reluctantly agrees to help the sexy Alpha in his quest to identify suspects; ones who'd kill her on the spot if they knew she existed. As Kalli places herself in the hands of the dominant wolf, she soon finds she wants nothing more than to submit.

Tristan, committed to ruling his pack as a lone wolf, is inexplicably drawn to the mysterious and enticing woman, who seems more than human, but not quite supernatural. As he discovers her secret, he teaches her the meaning of trust, helping her learn how to be true to her nature.  Will he succumb to the visceral need to claim her, acknowledging the soul binding connection between an Alpha and his mate?  And will he prevail against the menacing enemy who threatens to destroy Lyceum Wolves?

OBVB: What is it that attracts you to New Orleans?

KG: If I had to pick one thing, it would be its rich history.  Every time we go, we try to take a tour of some kind and always learn something new.  Of course, the incredible cuisine comes in a close second…as well as the music.  It is hard to explain, but there is just nothing like eating a plateful of Cajun seafood, while drinking hurricanes, and listening to a band play Cajun dance or Zydeco music as people dance a Cajun waltz.

OBVB: What was the most challenging thing you had to face when getting your book published?

KG: Getting seen, read and reviewed is probably the most challenging issue I face as a new author.  Promotion in itself is an art; one I’m still in the process of learning.  Also I’d say another challenge, as an indie writer, is that we are a one man show, which gives you all the control or too much control depending on how you feel about it.  In my opinion, it is imperative to use an editor, beta readers, proofreaders, cover artists and formatters to help you create a good book.  All these factors, especially marketing, can be challenges when you are independent.

OBVB: How did you celebrate when your book was published?

KG: Wow, you know, I don’t know that I did anything special.  My husband and I did celebrate privately.  The funny part is when you release a book, there’s a lot of work to be done with promotion.  I’m a busy bee after my books release, that’s for sure.

OBVB: Who was your favorite character in the book and why?

KG: This is a great question.  And as an author, you do find yourself having relationship with the characters.  When I’m writing, they feel like real people having real conversations even though they are entirely fictional and all in my own head.  It’s kind of funny.

Tristan is by far the sexist male I’ve ever written.  From business to sex, he’s completely confident in everything he does.  While he’s very dominant, he has a great sense of humor about him.  He’s a little bit of a bad boy as well; likes to ride his Harley, exudes sexuality and could care less if people see him naked after he shifts.  There’s a scene in Luca’s book when he transforms from wolf to man if front of Samantha and just starts talking to her nonchalantly as if he isn’t nude.  At some point, Luca looks at him and is like, “Really wolf?  Where’re your clothes?”  He just so confident and sure of his nature; he doesn’t ever pretend to be anything he isn’t.  He’s pure Alpha wolf.

OBVB: Do you have any muses for any of your characters?

KG: No not really.  But when it comes to romance, my love for my husband drives my writing.  He definitely inspires me, supports me and keeps me experiencing romance….both written and in my own life.

OBVB: I read that you like to travel when you are not writing. What was your favorite place to visit  and why?

KG: Yes.  I’ve been to New Orleans many times, and we love it there.  If you do site research, it is easier to write about what you know and really describe what you’ve tasted, heard, smelled, seen, etc. There is nothing like the taste of a beignet, the feel of the crowd, sights and wares of street vendors throughout the French Quarter or the sound of street musicians.  The last time we were there, we had the chance rent a car and tour the suburban areas, bayous, etc.  We even did an airboat tour which was nothing short of phenomenal. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.  The swamps are incredibly beautiful places, full of wildlife.

Another one of my favorite places to vacation is Jamaica and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  There was mention of Jamaica in Kade’s book.  And at the end of Tristan’s, there is mention of a pack in Wyoming.  One of Tristan’s brothers is from there, and I’d love to explore writing more about Wyoming in future books.

Honestly, there are so many places I’d like to travel, both as a couple, with just my husband and as a family, with our kids.  The world is an amazing place.  I want to be able to experience and learn as much as I can.

OBVB: Last but not least, are there any other projects you are working on? What is next is the Immortals of New Orleans series?

KG: The next book in the series will be Logan’s book.  In Tristan’s Lyceum Wolves, Logan is Tristan’s beta.  But by the end of the book, there is a surprise ending which leaves Logan in unforeseen circumstances.  Without telling spoilers, Logan’s life is about change as he takes on new responsibilities and finds himself back in New Orleans.

OBVB: Thank you so much for visiting Offbeat Vagabond, Kym! Can't wait to have you here again.

KG: Thanks so much for having me!  It was great to visit with you and your readers!

  6. Hi everyone - Thanks so much for stopping by to comment & read the interview :-) :-)

What keeps me inspired to write? I think sometimes it is hard to start my first chapter but there is this story in my head that just needs to be written. Not sure how to explain it but once I get started, I kind of become obsessed with getting it written. It kind of goes on like that day after day until it is all written.

Where do I get my ideas? I sort of just spend a lot of time thinking about my character and what he or she will be doing in the first scene. I write and think a scene at a time....don't use an outline. Once I get one scene written, I move onto the next one. It's funny but I do just spend a lot of time kind of daydreaming about what the characters are going to do and say while I'm at the gym or laying in bed at night...and then the next day, I sit and write that scene. :-)

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
