Blood Warrior Blog Tour - $25 GC/Book Giveaway + Interview with Lindsey Piper, author of Dragon Kings series

Interview with Lindsey Piper

OBVB: Hello Lindsey! Welcome to Offbeat Vagabond! To get the ball rolling, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
LP: Up until recently, when I was keeping my pseudonym all cloak-and-dagger sekrit, I would’ve been really vague. Now that CAGED WARRIOR and BLOOD WARRIOR are out, I can shout it loud! I’m Carrie Lofty, primarily known as a historical author but soon moving into New Adult contemporary, too. I also co-write erotic romance as Katie Porter. I live in the Chicago area, love Lake Michigan, and live for every possible day I can spend at Six Flags Great America. One day I’ll be one of those crazy people who base vacations on theme parks, just to try out newer, more extreme roller coasters!
OBVB: When did you discover your love for writing?

LP: My mother tells the story that before I knew how to spell words, I was already trying to put them into sentences. Anything I could do to put my thoughts on paper! I started writing fan fiction about Aliens and an Old West TV show called “The Young Riders” when I was ten. There’s never been a time when I didn’t “think” in stories. I talked to characters (and shhh...I still do) and knew I’d found my home when I read Elizabeth Lowell’s Fire and Rain. HOOKED.

OBVB: What first attracted you Paranormal Romance?
LP: I earned a RITA nomination for NIGHTFALL, part of the “Dark Age Dawning” trilogy I’d co-written as Ellen Connor, so that was my first experience with paranormal romance. And I got a RITA nom for it! That deserved a follow-up attempt, I thought. Plus I adore Doctor Who and I’ve been a fan of all things X-Men since I was fourteen. Don’t forget my previous mention of Aliens, and add in a bit of Terminator and Star Wars. It was bound to happen!

OBVB: What was the first PNR book you ever read? Who are your favorite

LP: A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole, who definitely remains my favorite! I’m so fortunate that we work with the same editor.

OBVB: Caged Warrior and Blood Warrior are your most recent releases. Can you tell us what the series is about?
LP: The Dragon Kings are an ancient race of demonic demigods on the edge of extinction. In CAGED WARRIOR, the hero and heroine carry on an underground tradition of fighting at the behest of human cartels for the right to bear children. BLOOD WARRIOR heads out into the world where the heroine’s mad brother is intent on her murder in order to fulfill a prophecy foretelling the return of their long-dead deity, the Great Dragon.
OBVB: What was the most challenging thing you had to face when starting this series?

LP: I have a graduate degree in history, so when writing historical romance, I was always able—in fact, obligated—to be as accurate as possible. The trick when starting the “Dragon Kings” was worldbuilding. “What do you mean there’s no history book for me to read??” I realized how little I actually knew about this place I’d invented. Where do they live? How long do they live? How do they interact with humans? What is their religious background and how do their powers work and what clans do they inhabit, etc, etc , etc...

I sat down at a Starbucks and handwrote fifty pages of detail. By the end of that massive, amazing purge, I’d created my own history book, so to speak. The question changed from “What do you mean there’s no history book for me to read?” to “You mean I get to make everything up??” My excitement was off the charts.

OBVB: How did you celebrate when your work was published?

LP: The trilogy sold in December, so we bought the big screen TV we hadn’t thought we’d be able to afford. I played Santa that year!
OBVB: Who was your favorite character in the book and why?
LP: Tallis is sexy and charming and violently protective, but I adore Kavya. She’s been so weary for so long, sacrificing herself for her people. Her heart is huge and full of hope, but her soul has been weighed down for years by this mission to aid her clan. That she’s a telepath, constantly beset by other peoples’ thoughts, was another burden. I loved writing about her opening up to life, to love, and to Tallis—the other side of herself.

OBVB: Do you have any muses for your characters?

LP: I always cast my heroes and heroines, from Robert Downey Jr. to Australian hiphop dancers no one’s ever heard of (here, at least). But I never tell! I don’t want to ruin anyone’s expectations with vastly different images they’ve already imagined in their minds.

OBVB: Were there any characters more challenging to write than others?

LP: Kavya was a challenge because she’s so good. She was even a virgin! How do you make a woman that self-sacrificing...interesting? She ran the risk of becoming really dull. I had to give her a few sharp edges—an unexpected temper, a surprising sex drive, and a willingness to do anything to keep her man safe.

OBVB: If you could be any supernatural creature, what would it be and why?

X-Men Wikia
LP: I’d be Jean Grey. Period. She’s brilliant. A beautiful redhead. Telepathy and telekinesis. Fought over both Cyclops and Wolverine... Perfect!

OBVB: If you can write any book outside your genre, what would it be and why?

LP: Seeing as how I’ve tried contemporary, erotica, historical, and paranormal, that mostly leaves historical fiction and horror. Horror sounds like more fun ;)

OBVB: Is there anything you must have or do when you are writing?

LP: Listen to music. With headphones. It’s got to the point where sound of the key strokes distracts me. My kids know that “headphones on” means “Mommy’s working”!

OBVB: Last but not least, are there any other projects you are working on?

LP: Three things at once! As Lindsey Piper, I’m working on HUNTED WARRIOR, the third in the “Dragon Kings” series. Co-writing as Katie Porter, we’re wrapping up the third in our sexy “Club Devant” Series, set in a New York City burlesque club. That’s called WATCH AND WAIT, out in January. Lastly, as my “real” self, Carrie Lofty, I’m writing a New Adult romance titled BLUE NOTES. That’ll be out from Pocket in February!

OBVB: Thank you so much for visiting Offbeat Vagabond, Lindsey. Hope to have you here again.
LP: I’d like that too. Thanks for the invite!

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
