Is Marissa Engles crazy? Or is she a paranormal Light Rebel who can shape form and manifest things using the electricity buzzing through her veins? Her aunt and sister think “Crazy.” The locked mental facility they've put her in thinks “Delusional.”

She’s so drugged up, she can’t tell if they’re right. Only her new pal, Rafe Caldwell, another mental patient “inmate”, thinks she is what she says she is. And he intends to find out more – lots more.

The only problem is her missing soul bound lover, Daniel Navid, who commands the darkest of the dark. But as they say, if the cat’s away…

Music - How Does It Factor Into Writing?

I sometimes get asked whether music factors into my writing. Without a doubt, it sure does! I have a strong, creative, musical background. I was a singer in a rock and roll band way back in the day. I also played Fender Rhodes electric piano. I later went on to play the djembe, a percussion instrument. I’ve taught dance (including hip hop), aerobics and spent my life finding ways to move and explore. Both my kids are talented musicians. It runs through our veins. Hence, I’ve got to have music playing when I write.

Music inspires evocative scenes. A good love scene needs a sexy, sensuous background to inspire. One of my playlists includes sexy, sultry, wicked hot songs including Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Bloodstream by Stateless, Justin Timberlake’s Sexy Back, Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty, Glory Box, by Portishead, F… You like an Animal by Nine Inch Nails (a classic), Play by Goapele, Beautiful by Snoop Dog (featuring Pharrel), and Angel by The xx. If I’m working on an angry scene or need an edge to my writing, I turn to P!nk and Radiohead. Moody, sad scenes are driven by Adele, Artemis, Damien Rice and The Civil Wars, to name a few. Ani di Franco can fill in for nearly any emotion.

Characters have their own theme music, as well. For instance, when I want to get pumped to work on A Wicked Ending, the 4th book in The Wicked Series, I think about the main character, Manoko Waikira-Williams, press play on the song Alright by John Legend and I’m immersed in Mano and Zuri’s world. I began my latest series, The Beckoning Series, submerged in sorrowful and angry songs, as I sorted out the ending of a great friendship. Repeat performances (as in over and over and over) of Rolling in the Deep, by Adele, Poison and Wine by the Civil Wars, Different by Goapele and Katie Melua’s Piece by Piece all served as fuel for the first two books, among other sad musical laments. I was angry, I was blue, I was confused and I needed good, healthy emotional expression. All of which was provided by writing and music. Could be why I started out the Beckoning of Broken Things with the heroine at a mental hospital!

Another fun thing done with a musical backdrop was a book reading soiree I did this past August. It was a large party, thrown in a friend’s back yard, with a couple of awesome and amazing, talented young musician friends. These friends play bluegrass and folk music - he plays mandolin and back up guitar; she’s a national fiddle champ. You might think was an odd pairing for reading erotica, but it worked well, everyone enjoyed it and I hope to do it again.

Without a doubt, music provides the mood backdrop, imagination provides the language, and life experience fuels the story. It’s an excellent means to a creative end which for me is crafting passionate tales that you can sink you mind, body and soul into.

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
