The Legacy, #1
Grief stricken Katie Dillinger is on a mission to claim revenge for the death of her lover. In a race against time to find the murderer, Katie reaches out to Riker, a man listed as her boyfriend’s emergency contact. The cold-hearted man comes to Katie’s aid, but she doesn’t completely trust him. To keep her friends safe, she insists they leave town immediately. But her efforts come too late. A friend disappears and a clear message is left in the wake: surrender or more people will die.
Katie’s world is turned upside down when she discovers Riker has vowed to protect her. She’s involved in a prophecy, one which her lover had been preparing her for before his murder. All the combat training he gave her suddenly makes sense, and as Katie fights to keep her friends alive, she’s forced to prioritize. Revenge now, saving mankind next.

OBVB: Welcome to Offbeat Vagabond, Mary! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
MA: Thank you for having me on your blog.About me…I'm a quiet woman living in Indiana. I work at a government job during the day. On the weekends, I write in my spare time. I work out 4-5 times a week, drink a ton of water, and chew a lot of gum. I enjoy reading, shopping with my daughter, traveling when I can afford it, and going out with friends. I'm pretty normal except for my over active imagination. LOL
OBVB: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
MA: Well, I always enjoyed writing. I enjoyed it throughout my youth when I was in school. In my early twenties, I wrote something and saved it on a floppy disk. My life was changing rapidly and I put writing to the side to take care of other priorities, like family and work. Well, around 2008 I realized I had time on my hands. I started writing. Shortly after I began, I decided I wanted to share my stories. Why not? The market was changing fast and I jumped on the train. My first book was published in late 2010.
OBVB: What first attracted you to the Paranormal Romance genre?
MA: I have a very open mind and I have always loved stories with supernatural creatures. Vampires are my favorite. I like the unknown and mysterious. Naturally, I went straight to paranormal romance.
OBVB: Who is your favorite Paranormal Romance author and why?
MA: Oh dear, I can't name just one. Sorry, but there are too many great PNR writers out there. I enjoy the works of Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Lyndsay Sands, Kerrelyn Sparks, Keri Arthur, Kelly Gay, Kelley Meding, Jeanine Frost…
OBVB: Immortal Revenge is the first book in your new Legacy series, correct? Can you tell us what the book is about?
MA: Yes, it's the first in a short series of three, maybe four books. In Immortal Revenge, you meet Katie and her supporting characters. She's lost the love of her life, an immortal a/k/a vampire. She's distraught and angry. She wants justice for her beloved lover. As she seeks revenge with the help of one of his friends, a vampire named Riker, she learns about a prophecy involving her. Naturally, she doesn't believe it. She has limited time to find the murderers and she has to stop them from killing more people. There's action, suspense, violence, and humor. It's quite a ride from heartache to revenge.
OBVB: What was the most challenging thing you had to face when writing Immortal Revenge?
MA: I didn't have challenges, other than mapping out a town and learning about weapons. Mishawaka is a real town in Northern Indiana. I've never visited, but I had to create a layout on paper. Once I did that, then I could articulate where things were and such. As for weapons, I still don't know nearly as much as I'd like to. I wanted to create a special bullet with acid. So, I contacted a friend and asked if it was possible. He said yes, so I went with my idea. But I really do need to know more about guns and swords and knives.
OBVB: How did you celebrate once the book was published?
MA: Honestly, I don't celebrate. I'm excited and happy, but I'm also busy with other things in my life. I need a break. LOL
OBVB: Were there any characters more challenging to write than others?
MA: Riker was a little challenging. The others were natural fits. Riker is a quirky version of Eric Northman from True Blood. He gives off this stiff, cold persona but then he'll throw out these lines to trick and confuse. He has secrets, deep ones that he'll have to divulge sometime.
OBVB: Any muses for for your characters?
MA: Nope, no muses. Well, except for Riker. As I mentioned earlier, I saw him as a twisted version of Eric Northman. Immortal Revenge poured out of my soul. The characters came to me in my sleep. The story came to me in the shower. Not in that order. I knew my plot and just let my fingers type away to fill in the details.
OBVB: I read that you have always been a fan of science fiction and paranormal. What is the one thing that made you love it (a book, movie, etc.)?
MA: I watched Star Trek in the 1980's and other science fiction shows. Battlestar Gallectica, etc etc. In the 1990's I had X-Files to enjoy. As for movies, Blade Runner, the early Star Trek movies, The Hunger, etc. I watched a lot of shows and movies of the two genres when I was growing up.
OBVB: What supernatural power would you want and why?
MA: Oh, so many to choose from. Hmm…I’d like telepathy or mind control. Immortality would be okay but I think I’d get bored eventually. LOL
OBVB: If you can write any book outside of Paranormal Romance, what would it be and why?
MA: Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Thriller. I already write urban fantasy. I like the paranormal aspect mixed with the action and violence. I'd like to venture more into science fiction. One day, I’d like to try a thriller too. Why? Both would be a great challenge and I'd like to see if I can do it.
OBVB: When you are not writing, what do you do in your free time?
MA: Read, catch up on shows, shop with my daughter, go out with friends, or see a movie if any good ones are on at the theatre.
OBVB: Is there anything you must have or do when you start writing?
MA: Yes, I must have an ample supply of water and gum. Extra spearmint or trident gum.
OBVB: Last but not least, are there any other projects you are working on?
MA: At the moment I’m taking a break. Next year, 2014, I plan to work on the next book in the Legacy series.
OBVB: Thank you so much for visiting Offbeat Vagabond hon. Hope to have you here again.
MA: Thank you for having me as a guest!
