Synopsis from M. A. Stacie

Sent to the family ranch to overcome his addiction, Taylor Reese is angry and hurt. Feeling rejected by his father and brother, Taylor throws himself into ranch life to help him forget. But it isn’t long before it hits him hard how much his life has spiraled out of control, leaving him floundering and looking for a lifeline.

Libby Karlin is cautious, wary of Taylor’s presence. Her dark past makes her reluctant to let anyone near her family. But after Taylor strikes up a friendship with her son, Libby finds herself drawn to the sadness within him. His experiences are no secret to her, though she keeps her own buried until a knock on her door has her gasping for breath.

Could dealing with their pasts really give them a future?

Behind the Scandal Top 10 Playlist

I really enjoyed making a playlist for Behind the Scandal, and each song on the list has a very specific reason for being on it.

In no particular order…

1: Linkin Park – Numb

“I'm tired of being what you want me to be.
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface.
Don't know what you're expecting of me.
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes”

I think the lyrics speak for themselves. And for Taylor.

2: Haim – Don’t Save Me “Take me back, take, take Take me back to the way that I was before. Hungry for what was to come. Now I'm longing for the way I was. You say you will, say you will save me”

Again, another one that fits Taylor perfectly.

3: All I Need – Radiohead

"You are all I need You’re all I need I'm in the middle of your picture Lying in the reeds I am a moth Who just wants to share your light I'm just an insect Trying to get out of the night”

Every time I hear this I think of Taylor & Libby.

4: Camera – Editors

“I'll keep your eyes wide open tonight Keep the car on the road now feel the fight Look at us Through the lens of a camera Does it remove All of our pain? If we run To look in the back room Where we hide All of our feelings”

5: Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts
“I learned to live half alive And now you want me one more time And who do you think you are? Runnin' 'round leaving scars Collecting your jar of hearts And tearing love apart You're gonna catch a cold From the ice inside your soul So don't come back for me Who do you think you are?”

A song for when Taylor starts to see clearly.

6: Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams
“I walk a lonely road The only one that I have ever known Don't know where it goes But it's home to me and I walk alone I walk this empty street On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams Where the city sleeps And I'm the only one and I walk alone”
Another one very specific to Taylor and his state of mind when he arrives at the Ranch.

 7: Kelly Clarkson – Sober
“And I don't know This could break my heart or save me Nothing's real Until you let go completely So here I go with all my thoughts I've been saving So here I go with all my fears weighing on me Three months and I'm still sober Picked all my weeds but kept the flowers But I know it's never really over”
A great one from Taylor to Libby

8: All American Rejects – It Ends Tonight
“The walls start breathing My mind's unweaving Maybe it's best you leave me alone. A weight is lifted On this evening I give the final blow. When darkness turns to light, It ends tonight It ends tonight.”

9: Avril Lavigne – Keep Holding On “You're not alone Together we stand I'll be by your side, you know I'll take your hand When it gets cold And it feels like the end There's no place to go You know I won't give in No I won't give in” Great for Libby & Taylor together

10: Bush – Glycerine
“It must be your skin I'm sinking in It must be for real 'cause now I can feel And I didn't mind It's not my kind It's not my time to wonder why Everything's gone white And everything's gray Now you're here now you're away I don't want this Remember that I'll never forget where you're at”

Behind the Scandal is the sequel to Beneath the Surface. This time around, we follow Taylor, Kyran's brother. Taylor is a drug addict who has pushed his luck to the end. Well, that luck being his father's money. His dad will no longer give him money. Instead, his dad sent him to his brother's ranch to sober up. Of course, Taylor hates it there. Not only does he feel trapped, but he is in detox. But he ends up meeting his uncle's neighbor, Libby, and her son, Levi. Taylor and Libby don't mix well at all at first, but they slowly start to trust each other. But not enough to reveal all of the demons they are running from.

I was waiting for the sequel to "Beneath the Surface" and this was worth the wait. Stacie gave us a great emotional rollercoaster that I couldn't put down. I wasn't a big fan of Taylor's at first. He was either acted like a major jackass or a five year old. He wanted his father to pay for everything and didn't want any responsibilities. He was awful. He hates his dad, but he has no problem using him. I wanted to punch him. We see him going through detox and that makes things worse. He has these major nosebleeds and mood swings. He can be very unpleasant to be around. We slowly start to get glimpses of the man he really is under the drug fog though and I liked that Taylor a lot. He can be quite charming and mischievous in a fun way. I am glad we met that Taylor.

I really liked Libby. She was a spunky woman that wasn't going to take any of Taylor's crap. If he pushed,, she pushed back. She tried to fight the attraction to Taylor because she knows he is all types of wrong, but she can't help it. I love that she doesn't give up on him. It would have drove me nuts putting up with Taylor and his moods. But she has a six year old, so I guess she was used to it. I really think that played a part as well. Levi, her son, was the cutest thing ever. I love how Taylor looks after him. After we learn about Libby's demons, he is going to need it. We find that Libby is on the run and it seems her time at the ranch may be up. It definitely hurts seeing tough woman like Libby jump at her own shadow. Can't say I blame her.

I loved learning about these characters and their stories. I wish we got more though for Taylor. I wanted more time with Taylor through his change. I sort of felt there like there was a gap from him going from junkie to clean and sober. I enjoy following characters through their journey and I felt like I missed some of his. I wanted a bit more than that. I do like what we learn and his reasons for what he does. He definitely has reasons. His dad can't seem to find a second for him and he lost his mom when he was really young. Taylor also clashes with his brother especially after the incident with Kyran's girlfriend Dale who we met in the first book. Things were more fleshed out with Libby though. Her reasons to be scared for her life are extremely tough. I love that Taylor is there to help her through it. I just would have liked to have seen a bit more of that transition where he goes from being a boy to a man. Nonetheless, I am happy he changed and he worked on making himself a better man.

The story was pretty easy to fall in love with. I love a good redemption story and Taylor really needs redeeming. He has good qualities and watching those come out made him a million times more enjoyable. I love how the story progressed and how intense it got. The characters are great and this was well put together. I would have wanted just a bit more backstory for these characters and to witness more of their growth on a personal level, but overall, I highly recommend this series.

About M. A. Stacie

M. A. Stacie is never without a book or her eReader. A voracious reader, with a love of sexy, yet angst ridden novels, she loves getting lost in new worlds. Her need to write did not grip her until after her second son was born, when her previous rambles became fully fledged stories.

She describes herself as one huge contradiction, and though not the most conventional of hobbies, she counts getting new tattoos as one of hers. Along with running, knitting, and listening to loud music. However, she is yet to work out how to do them all at the same time.

M. A. Stacie lives in the UK with her husband and three sons.

Due to the daily spam comments I have been getting lately and to avoid the annoying word verification, Anonymous comments are no more. I do not want bargains on bags, watches, jerseys, boots and other crap. Geez, they could at least spam me with book and movie stuff, I would be somewhat interested LOL! Thank you :D
