Excerpt

But there’s something I have to do before this goes any further.

Slowly, I draw my head away from her embrace, finding the courage to finally meet her eyes. Her hair hasn’t been combed and her face is all tear-stained, but she has never looked more beautiful.

She stands, bracing herself against me. Her breath hitches when I gently start unbuttoning her shirt, but her eyes never leave my face. I stop partway up, raising the bottom half of her cami up and over her baby bump. Dropping down, I run my hands across her stomach, feeling her shiver against my fingertips. Looking up at her, I place my lips on her bellybutton, kissing the child that’s growing within her, the miracle we created.

I will never ask you to choose again,” I say solemnly, my voice nothing but a whisper.

Ivy starts to cry in earnest, placing her hands atop mine.

You are my heart now. Whatever happens to you happens to me.” I kiss each one of her knuckles as she sighs deeply, like she’s been longing with all her soul to hear me say these words. “I know I’m not as brave as you are, but I promise to try harder.”

Eric, stop. You’re the bravest man I know,” she proclaims with a tender fierceness, tears shining in her eyes.

I’m just so afraid of losing you,” I mutter, breaking down.

Oh, Eric,” she whimpers, sobbing right along with me. “I know, baby... I know.”

I lean back against the wall, guiding her onto my lap. We don’t say anything more. We just sit there and hold each other, savoring the moment.

Synopsis from Goodreads

Twenty-three year old Dimitri has to do what he is told—literally. Controlled by a paranormal bond, he is forced to use his wits to fulfill unlimited deadly wishes made by multimillionaire Karl Walker.

Dimitri has no idea how his family line became trapped in the genie bond. He just knows resisting has never ended well. When he meets Syd—assertive, sexy, intelligent Syd—he becomes determined to make her his own. Except Karl has ensured Dimitri can’t tell anyone about the bond, and Syd isn’t the type to tolerate secrets.

Then Karl starts sending him away on back-to-back wishes. Unable to balance love and lies, Dimitri sets out to uncover Karl’s ultimate plan and put it to an end. But doing so forces him to confront the one wish he never saw coming—the wish that will destroy him.

A dark twist on the genie folklore, SUMMONED follows a reluctant criminal as he unravels the mystery of the paranormal bond controlling him.

SUMMONED is represented by Rossano Trentin of TZLA.

Note: SUMMONED contains strong language, naughty scenes, mature content, terrible wishes, mystery, violence, discomfort, explosions, and an apple.

This is my second book about genies and/or wish making in general. I have to say, I wish this were more of theme. I read this book in a day. I was expecting this to be fun, but it went way beyond that. This is definitely one of my favorite reads this year. I want more of this, like right now.

I really liked our main character, Dimitri. He is not a character you should like, but he has his reasons. Dimitri is our main character, but he is also technically the villain. He is a genie and whatever his master commands him to do, he must do or risk the consequence of his brain pretty much exploding on him until the task is done. He has been commanded to steal, kidnap, or kill people. The book opens up with him kidnapping a little girl. He was so nonchalant about it and I really want to hate him.

We soon learn more about him, however. He comes off as the biggest jerk ever, but he has to be considering what his "job" entails. Once he is summoned by his master, he has to leave immediately or else. He has no free will and is basically a pet. But he meets a girl named Syd. They hit it off instantly. It was supposed to be a one time thing, but she seems to like Dimitri despite him not being the most charming person. I loved it when these two were together. It was steamy, but not too steamy. This isn't necessarily a romance book. As a matter of fact, it was a bit more realistic than you would think. The fact that Dimitri is a genie has nothing to do with him as a person. He has no super powers of any kind or anything. He is the greatest criminal. He mentions time and time again how stealth is not his thing. He is really an average guy who happens to have the genie gene which means he can't have a life of his own. His life belongs to his master and he must do what they say.

Syd was awesome in this book. The book is told through Dimitri's POV, so we don't get to know a lot about Syd. Dimitri doesn't know how to handle relationships and I don't think he realizes he is in a relationship until it is too late. But we get to know her more in the second half and I loved her. She is quite the badass. We also some of the Walkers. They will scare the mess out of you. Karl is Dimitri's master and he is a maniac. But then we have Karl's daughter, Silvia. She was a bit off her rocker. Ok, not a bit, a lot. I really thought she was the devil. At first, I did feel a bit bad for her since it is obvious that she has been so sheltered. But then she would do or say something that squashed any sympathy I had for her. Seriously, she will scare you more than her dad and everyone seemed to be afraid of her dad. No one knows what Silvia is capable of.

One of the greatest things about this book is the originality. I love what how Kaye used the story of the genie or the jinn here. Dimitri and his whole family are owned by the Walker family. They have been for generations. Karl Walker is his master and has been having killing people left and right as of late. It is Dimitri's job not to ask why. But Karl does something not of the norm that is bugging Dimitri. He starts to think and dig and soon discovers things he didn't know about the Walkers or himself. I love the way this story unravels. I loved putting all the pieces while reading and boy, there are a lot of pieces.

I think I could go over this book all day. I am that much in love with him. I loved Dimitri's dry sense of humor, I loved all of the action, and I loved this incredible story. I could see this as a movie. Hollywood could use some creativity. Look no further. I wasn't expecting explosions and insane car chases or chases in general. If you want a book to really sink your teeth in, this is the perfect choice. Again, I read it in a day. It is one of the best page-turners I have come across in a while. Original, exciting, steamy, and just downright thrilling. Trying to connect the dots and trying to figure out how Dimitri will get himself out of a sticky situation (well, situations) was such an exhilarating experience. I can't believe this is a series. I am dying to see what else Kaye has up her sleeve. Highly recommended. Make it your next read. You won't regret it.

Synopsis from Goodreads

There is an exclusive group known as the Grants who only allow the most seductive women into their circle, and Madeline “Mady” Chase would give anything to get in. After years of mundane, disappointing sex, Mady is ready for more. Much more. Too many men out there favor the trashy crap that often parades around the local bars and college hangouts. To Mady, it seems like they’d rather drool over a girl with a fifty thousand dollar plastic surgery bill and clothes that would better fit a five-year-old than find some substance and passion in a woman. She wants more than stale, bland, fake sex, and the Grants could be just what she needs.

Isaac Wilson has been dissatisfied more times than he can count in the past two years. Being one of the Grants definitely has its privileges, but now he finds himself wanting more. Usually, it just meant another long month of disenchantment on his part when the Grants realized their new batch of women were no good. Each year, the program found several candidates that fit their needs, but as was often the case, they lacked that certain spark Isaac was looking for. To him, it didn't matter. Either way, he’d have a lot of fun wading through the rejects.

Interview

OBVB: Welcome to Offbeat Vagabond, Emma! To start things off, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

EH: Sure. I'm a hopeless romantic, private sexual deviant, and suffer from insomnia which helps me delve in the fantasies of the first two. It's a perfect environment for a romance writer, really.

OBVB: What first attracted you to the Romance genre? What first inspired you to write?

EH: I'm a huge reader and romance is one of my favorite genres. I write a bit of everything but the vast array of emotions that come with love are so diverse. Playing with human emotions, delving into what drives us, keeps me intrigued.

OBVB: Are there any books that have influenced you?

EH: I can't think of one in particular. The genre as a whole inspires me.

OBVB: Who would you say is your favorite author(s) and why?

EH: I love many authors but I'd have to say that JR Ward and Christine Feehan are some of the authors that first pulled me in with their tales.

OBVB: What is the most challenging thing you face when writing a new story?

EH: The ending!!! My mind usually concocts several possible endings and it's a fight with the characters to see which one wins. In the end I let the characters take me where they want to go.

OBVB: A Betty's Pledge is your newest book, correct? Can you tell the book will be about?

EH: The book is volume one in a series that follows one woman's hunt to find pleasure. She enters an exclusive club that offers every woman's desire. But there's a secret the members are keeping hidden from their Betties.

OBVB: Were there any characters more difficult to write than others?

EH: Some characters truly grossed me out. Some bad guys are really fun to write. Some become a challenge.

OBVB: I really like the concept of your book. Where did the idea come from?

EH: Honestly, the concept came to me while I was lying in bed. It'd been a long night and insomnia was winning the fight for sleep. Sometimes when that happens my mind will come up with plot lines. This story was a late night concoction that wouldn't be quiet.

OBVB: If your story were to be made into a movie/tv show, who can you see as your characters and why?

EH: I honestly have never thought about this, believe it or not. I'm interested to see what others come up with. My best friend is always really good about coming up with casts for her favorite books. Me, I make the characters in my mind. Maybe someday I'll come up with someone to play Mady.

OBVB: If you can write any book outside of the Romance genre, what would it be and why?

EH: I've always loved dark fantasy novels. I may or may not have something in the works ;)

OBVB: When you are not writing, what do you do in your free time?

EH: I'm reading!!! I'm a huge reader.

OBVB: Is there anything you must have or do when you start writing?

EH: I cold beer or a glass of red wine. Depends on what scene I'm writing. Lol!

OBVB: Is there any advice you could give to new authors?

EH: Have as many prereaders as you can find! And if you have a diverse pool that will offer different opinions and insights while be constructive and courteous is a win! Authors actually make great prereaders.

OBVB: Last but not least, are there any other projects you are working on?

EH: I have a short story series called From Infatuation to Obsession: And All The Phases In Between. Book one is available now. I'm working on edits for book two and three. Also the second volume to A Betty's Pledge.

OBVB: Thank you so much for visiting Offbeat Vagabond, Emma. Hope to have you here again.

*********************************************

A Betty's Pledge is a new book from author Emma Husher and a different experience for me. I really like the idea that Husher has come up with for this book. Women called Betties are inducted into a program to explore their sexuality with other privileged people. Our main character Madeline (or Mady) isn't so privileged, so she has been sponsored. She will now be living amongst the rich exploring things she could only dream of.

I did like Mady, to an extent. She is a mix of shy and sexy vixen which I liked. It have her a bit of mystery. But when it came to her being in the house, I found her a bit confusing at times. One of the men that run the program, called Grants, has taken a strong liking to Mady. There is an instant connection to them when introductions are made. Mady wants to know if there is more to the program than just sex given there are actual couples. But she bounces back between wanting love or just sex. She is constantly fighting it and it drove me mad because she knew what she wanted. She had a choice between two suitors and her debating drove me nuts. One of the men gave her the creeps and made her feel uncomfortable. I don't know what it was, but she just wouldn't go with the obvious choice. All because you are in a sex charged mansion doesn't mean you have to sleep with whoever. If someone is making you feel uneasy, run because there is probably a reason for it.

I also liked Isaac, but I wanted to slap sense into him too. He was a lot like Mady. They both have two sides. One side, he is confidant and cocky. The other, he is a romantic who wants more than sex with the LA plastics. But again, he fought it so much as well. Both of them have a hard believing in love where they are, but they are surrounded by people who have met in the program and are still together. The whole point of them being here is to explore and they have the opportunity to explore each other and they don't take advantage of it quick enough. Mady explores a bit of something she has been curious about with her mentor, Diane (loved her). But that was really it. Diane was a favorite. There seems to be a little trouble in her paradise though. I hope we get more on that. But back to what I was saying, Mady does her exploring. But near the end, Isaac is caught doing something and her reaction was crazy for me. You know who you want, you know where to find him, go and get him. They try not to let emotions into it and that in turn makes things worse for them both. It just drove me crazy at times.

Then there is the ending. When I got to it, I started screaming at my ereader begging for another chapter or two. It is not that it is a cliffhanger, but more that it just stops. The book doesn't have as much confrontation as I would have thought. All the issues that arise are just the characters trying to figure themselves out. But there are definitely some set ups here that I know we will see more of in the next book. There are characters that have trouble written all over them and I wish we got to see more of that here, but I know we will the next time around.

Overall, this was a good read. I just wanted a little more. More push-and-pull, more tension. We are really just learning about the world itself and it seems the characters are learning more about themselves and that is the point. I got sucked into this world quite quickly. I love how this book may seem sexual in nature, I like that it wasn't uncomfortable like it was some sort of brothel. You are eased into it and not freaked out. Well, by certain characters you may be. Take that Brad character for instance. I know hate is a strong word which is why I am saying I hate him. Mady described him perfectly in this book as calling him a wannabe white rapper from the 90s. I laughed so hard at that. Not to mention, the way he speaks about women in general will gross you out. There could be a chance at redemption, but I don't know. But I can't wait to see more. There are plenty of characters to follow and they all have some growing to do. I am pretty excited about volume 2. Husher has breathed a new life into the erotic world and I want to see where she will take it. Recommended if you are looking for something different and to get your blood boiling a bit.

Synopsis from Goodreads

When good fails, chaos rises to the challenge.

The daily life of a chaos demon is delightfully sinful—overindulging in Sri Lankan delicacies, trespassing on private beaches in Hawaii, and getting soused at the best angel bar on the planet. But when Bedlam learns that the archdemon Azrael has escaped from the Abyss in order to wreak vengeance against the person who sent her there—Bedlam’s best friend, Khet—he can’t sit idly by.

Only one relic possesses the power to kill Khet, who suffers immortality at Lucifer’s request: the mythical Spear of Destiny, which pierced Christ’s side at His crucifixion. Neither angel nor demon has seen the Spear in two thousand years, but Azrael claims to know its location. Bedlam has no choice but to interpret woefully outdated clues and race her to its ancient resting place.

His quest is made nearly impossible by the interference of a persnickety archivist, Keziel—his angelic ex—and a dedicated cult intent on keeping the Spear out of the wrong hands. But to Bedlam, “wrong” is just an arbitrary word, and there’s no way he’s letting Khet die without a fight.

*********************************************

Raising Chaos is the sequel to Carrigan's Earthbound Angels series. This time we follow the Demon of Chaos, Bedlam. Bedlam is the best friend to Carrie (now called Khet) and would do anything for her. When Bedlam is out once again fighting off his boredom, he makes a terrible discovery. The demon Azrael that Lucifer cast into the Abyss because of Khet is out somehow. The one thing she has on her mind is revenge. She wants to kill Khet for what happened. Khet, however, is as immortal as the angels and demons. But Azrael has found a way around that. She knows where the Spear of Destiny is and that is the only weapon that can kill her or any of them. Bedlam is not going to let anything happen to Khet, but first, he has to find her.

Let me start off by saying how much I enjoy these book covers. They're awesome. I really enjoyed Oracle in Philadelphia and this was a super fun sequel. The main reason this was such much fun was due to our main character, Bedlam. Bedlam was a favorite in the first book and he still is now. I just love his personality. He is just all over the place, bouncing off-the-walls crazy, but you can't help but love him. He can be a bit selfish at times, but I just can't hate him. Khet is still running the diner she owns and it is in a bit of a dump. She wants a change of scenery, so she ups and leaves her life behind. Khet runs into a bar for a job, but ends up in a bit of a situation that becomes bigger than she thought. I really like Khet. She is smart and able. I love how far she will go to save those around her. Just like in the first book. It makes you love her more.

I really love Corrigan's imagination. Her take on the angel and demon world is so creative and fresh. I am so glad she made a sequel so we can revisit that world. Corrigan kept with the rich storytelling. We got the flashbacks which I love. These guys have been around for thousands of years, you know they have a few good stories to tell. I love that we got into the mind of both Bedlam and Khet. Again, Bedlam's monologue is just a riot. He is so much fun, but I love that we see him grow a bit in the book. He goes through his own trials throughout the book. I do love where it ended. I am extremely curious about one character in the book though. I hope it is explained in another book. A character goes through a change (through some violent means) and the book doesn't really explain how. I am dying to know how because it doesn't make sense when it happens to another character, but with a different result. When you read it, you will know what I am talking about.

This is a great read. It is funny and well-written. The world Corrigan has made is so vast and complex. It makes this book quite the pageturner. Bedlam and Khet are such great characters. They are very easy to root for. I got pretty emotional about them given what takes place. I hope in the next book they will have a romance. Not with each other because they make it clear that they are the best of friends. I love the two of them together, but they both love someone else. I would love to see if it goes anywhere especially between Khet and the Angel of Joy, Gabriel. I am so excited for more, I really hope there is more. I am loving this series. Highly recommended for Urban Fantasy fans.
