Need You Now is a short story following a woman named Danny. She is having fun night celebrating her best friend's birthday. Her best friend, Katie, is more of an adventurous type. Danny is very different to her. Things are going well until Danny goes to get their drinks. She then meets a man named Jensen. They have an instant attraction to each other. Danny, however, is trying her best to ignore the attraction. But when that doesn't work, she is thrown in the middle of something she wasn't expecting. This makes the attraction she has been fighting even harder.

Jones has done it again. I get so excited when I see she has a new book coming out. I have to clear my schedule to make sure I can dive right into them. Her work is so addicting and this is no different. I really liked Danny. She is in a shell and likes to be alone except for her friend Katie. I like that she breaks out of her shell and is willing to give Jensen a chance (at least for a night). What we learn the next day, though, was crazy. My mouth dropped. Let the awkwardness ensue. After things are revealed, I did want to slap Jensen when he came to a conclusion about Danny. Men. Still, I loved Jensen. The moment we meet him, he just exudes a sexiness that made my mouth water. I need him now too.

Now this is a short story which means there are things I want to know more about. First, Danny's best friend, Katie and her rock star boyfriend. Danny doesn't like Katie's boyfriend. She thinks he is ruining her. Katie does something out of the blue that Danny doesn't like at all. I hope we get some more story here because I don't know how much I trust what is going on with her.  I also wanted more at the end. I would have liked if Jensen explained a bit of what was going on with Danny and her job. I could easily have another 50 or 100 pages to this story. I didn't want it to end. It was over too soon for me. So I am really craving for more of these characters and this world.

Overall, this is a well written short story. I was iintrigued from beginning to end. Jones always creates characters that you love and want to get to know. I want more of this so bad. I heard that this is actually a prequel, so that makes me insanely excited. I can't wait because this is fangirl worthy. Highly recommended. If you have never read Jones' work, you need to start today.

Synopsis from Lisa Renee Jones
Novella

The warmth of Thanksgiving gives a dedicated reporter and a powerful businessman a chance to count their blessings in this tender, sensual novella from Lisa Renee Jones.

Kali Miller has spent three years reporting fluff stories for a small-town Texas paper, waiting for the opportunity to pen the article that will launch her career to new heights. That dream has never felt further away when she suddenly finds herself out of work, forced to take a job as an executive secretary at a Las Vegas casino. But that’s exactly where Kali meets the subject of what will surely be a shocking exposé: her boss, Damion Ward, the casino’s arrogant and undeniably sexy CEO.

Watching Damion make his cold, calculating business maneuvers, Kali is positive she’s doing the right thing. But after Damion invites her to help him plan a Thanksgiving charity event, Kali begins to see another side of the man. And when she surrenders to the exhilarating tension that’s been simmering between them since day one, Kali becomes part of her own story, which she hopes will have a happy ending.

EXCERPT

Kali!”

I hear Damion shout, but I do not stop. I spot an open elevator and slip inside moments before it closes. I hesitate only briefly, then punch the button for the office floor. If I go to my room, Damion will follow, and I will cave and let him in. I can’t talk to him until I figure out what I’m feeling. Not right now. I won’t talk to him right now.

Hugging myself, I wait for my floor, trying to stop the shaking. Damn it, I’m weak. I don’t want to be weak. The elevator dings for my floor and I exit. Dana is on the phone and waves at me, giving me a smile I just can’t return. At my desk, I all but fall into my chair and will myself not to cry. I grab a stack of mail and start opening it, trying to stay sane.

I know the moment Damion is in the lobby, the scent of him blistering my nostrils. He is like a drug. I think I’ve become that to him, too. He is risking too much for me. I have to leave here, and him, and it’s going to destroy me.
Suddenly he is standing beside me, towering over me. “Let’s go talk.”
I don’t look at him. “No. Not now.”
Kali—”
I turn to him and snap, “Not. Now.”
Yes,” he says, turning my chair to face him, his hands on the arms. “Now.”
Write me up, Damion, fire me, but I am not ready to talk.”
Hey, Kali—”
The sound of Dana’s voice makes me cringe, and I can’t even look at her. “I, uh,” she stammers from behind me, and I hear her departing steps.
Either come with me,” Damion warns tightly, “or I’ll pick you up and carry you.”
Don’t even think about it.”
He pulls me to my feet and drags me into his office, shutting the door and locking it. I try to escape and at least put distance between us. His hand comes down on my arm and he turns me to face him.
I blast him. “You just told the whole damn place that we’re together when we haven’t even really been together. Why would you do that? Why?”
He maneuvers me against the wall, framing my body with his. “We are together, and if you didn’t believe that, you wouldn’t have signed that notarized letter.”
We aren’t together, and now we won’t ever be together. I have to leave. I can’t stay. I can’t let you get fired over me.”
I won’t let you go, and I won’t get fired.”
I had a right to privacy. Terrance should have asked permission to share my personal affairs, and don’t tell me I signed a form or I might hurt you right now. Kent and my alcoholic asshole father—who thinks if he puts ‘functional’ before the ‘alcoholic’ it’s actually acceptable—weren’t supposed to know I’m here. If I wanted them to know, I would have told them.”
Kali—”
And I didn’t run away from those people, like you accused me of. I chose to shut them out and be happy. This was supposed to be my place and now it isn’t. Now they know I’m here and everyone here knows about us.”
This is your place, Kali, and I’m not letting you go without a fight.” His fingers twine in my hair, tilting my head back, forcing me to look at him. “We might be new, Kali, but we’re damn good together.”
What about—”
We’ll figure it out. Together, Kali. We’ll figure it out together.” And then his mouth closes down on mine, his tongue stroking past my lips, his palm molding me close to him. I try to resist, but it’s more because I feel I have to, because I should. Only I don’t want to resist this man. Not now and not since the moment I met him. I cave to my need for him, moaning as I sink into the kiss. I know we are headed for trouble, and I’ve had enough trouble. But I have not had enough of him.
I tug at his shirt, suddenly desperate to feel his skin next to mine. To know if it will feel as good as I’ve imagined it would. My fingers slide beneath the cotton material, absorbing his body heat and the warmth of taut skin over hard muscle.
His mouth trails over my cheek to my ear. “Together,” he promises again, his warm breath teasing my sensitive flesh and sending a shiver down my spine.
Yes,” I whisper, and I don’t let myself think about trouble or tomorrow. I cling to him, arching my body into his, trying to get closer to him, afraid I will never get close enough.
He cups the back of my head, slanting his mouth over mine, kissing me deeply, passionately. Breaking only to seductively trail his lips over my jaw, my neck, my ear, and I am lost in the haze of desire.
I want you naked,” he murmurs, tugging my dress up over my hips, and, with that, an unwelcome jolt of reality hits me.
I grab at my dress and pant, “Wait. We can’t. Not here. We could get caught.”
The door is locked.” He turns me to face the wall, pressing my hands to it, his on top of mine, his big, wonderful body encasing me. He leans in close, his mouth at my ear. “And,” he murmurs, “if you’re still worried about getting caught, I need to do a better job of distracting you.” He tugs on the zipper of my dress, and I open my mouth to resist, only to moan as his tongue begins to follow the metal downward. And his tongue is magic burning through me, sending waves of sensations to every nerve ending I own.

GUEST POST

Dark Genesis is an unconventional, Paranormal, Romance that is very different to most vampire novels that are currently on the market. One of the things that make this novel so unique is the fact that it is a love story that is set against the savage world of slavery. Writing an entertaining novel, whilst remaining true to the brutal reality of slavery, gave me a unique challenge. It also forced me to create characters that do not conform to the gender roles for that genre.

I think every good book has to have a villain, and in my novel, slavery is the real villain. During slavery, slavers stole human beings from their homes and denied them a right to exist as human beings. It was an institution that relied on systematically degrading and dehumanising human beings in order for them to remain submissive.

Luna, my female lead, is an example of the devastating effect that kind of systematic degradation can have on a person’s sense of self. A beautiful slave who also has the innate supernatural abilities of her ancestors who were powerful witches, she has been so beaten down by her dehumanising experiences that she has suppressed all that she is, including her latent supernatural abilities. When we meet her at the beginning of the novel she is closed off emotionally and keeps people at a distance in order to survive the harsh realities of life as a female slave.

For Luna love is something that is as distant to her as the sun, and as she expresses in Chapter 17 of the novel,

“That ain’t nothing no slave can affords to own. We can’t afford ourselves so how we afford to love each other?”

When love enters Luna’s world, it comes from an unexpected source. And it is only when she learns to love another that she begins to blossom and her latent powers are awoken along with her inner strength which allows her to reclaim the humanity that was stolen from her.
Having a heroine who has been dehumanised to the extent Luna has meant I had to have a hero who is unconventional for this genre. Avery is a powerful vampire who is able to act as Luna’s protector. Yet he has also been dehumanised, more so than Luna, and it is his sensitivity, along with the depth of his suffering, that allows him to break through the barriers Luna has erected to keep others at a distance. Being made into a vampire stripped Avery of his humanity, forcing him to exist on the margins of society. When he comes across Luna, he has pretty much forgotten who he is, and in order to win her love, he has to find a way back to the humanity he thought was lost, a journey Luna and Avery are able to make together and which is the beginning of an enduring love affair between these two disparate characters.

Mixing vampires and slavery is something most would not think of doing, but it meant I was able to create a unique take on the vampire novel and an epic love story that defies barriers of race, time and even death.

EXCERPT

There were rare moments when the full horror of a female slave’s life fell on me and I felt that now when I glanced up at the woods and the path I would take back to the house. An all-encompassing despair rocked me from head to toe. I didn’t want to go back to a life of bondage. I didn’t want to go back to my quarters and drink the evil concoction which would hunt down and kill the innocent in my womb. I didn’t want to go back to a life where I saw evil practiced with ease and nonchalance, a life in which evens my body was not mine to own.
Master John had been away for the past week but when I got back to my cabin tonight and fell asleep, would I find myself jolted awake by him, his form looming over me in the pale light of the moon streaming through the open window, his male tool already awake and straining against the cotton of his trousers?
The mere thought caused me to double over with my arms wrapped around my waist, my face close to the water and the rocks beneath its surface.
The cause of most of my problems lay in the face that was almost lost in the watery surface now that the light was gone. I reached my hand into the stream and pulled out a large black rock. It looked as if it had split in two and the split end was as sharp as the blade of a knife. I held that rock up above my face and thought about Mama Akosua being brought to a strange land against her will at the age of fifteen. I thought about how lost and frightened she must have felt being so far from everything she knew and loved, and the strength and fearlessness she displayed when she took a blade to her own face and cut those marks into her skin. In doing so, she had honored and held onto the customs of her people, people she would never see again. Those scars that I had previously been repulsed by and seen as part of the savage ways of her past, had given her strength. They had been a way to take ownership of at least one part of her body and keep it forever hers.
I would do the same thing. I would take control of at least one aspect of my life and destroy the face that drew men like Master John to me like predators to the scent of fresh blood. I would use this rock to take away the pleasure he found in looking at this face and keep him out of my bed forever.
I brought the sharpest point of the rock down to rest in the middle of my forehead and closed my eyes. I began to apply pressure until I felt it break the skin, a point no bigger than the tip of my fingernail, and felt a warm release of blood. Strangely, I felt no pain, only exhilaration that I could finally do something to stop the terror inflicted on me by my Master.
I was about to bring the rock down my forehead, across my nose and down my cheek, when something, some force, stayed my hand. All at once I grew cold and it felt as if the air around my wrist was alive and humming softly in tune to some sinister beat, making goose bumps spring up along my forearm.
I pushed down with all my might but miraculously this force increased and when I felt my hand begin to move away from my face, I opened my eyes.
I was still facing the woods and for a moment I thought I saw something amongst the trees, a sliver of something that was an almost translucent white. At the same moment I experienced a wave of dizziness that made me feel as if my mind and body had turned to water. I quickly shut my eyes but the dizziness increased and I felt myself swaying, my thoughts and emotions a confusing melee, and I heard a voice in my head. Or was it my own voice?
That will not stop him, it said.
My eyes snapped open when I heard a sharp crack to my right. I whirled around to trace the sound, a sharp streak of fear leaping and twisting within me. It was only when I noticed that my hand was now empty and clenched into a fist that I realized that what I had heard was the sound of the rock I had just been holding hitting one of the trees on my right. The distance to that tree was a good seven or eight meters away. Had I really thrown it that far?
I got to my feet uneasily, knowing that I needed to get away from the chapel immediately. Something was very wrong here. The light was nearly gone now and there was something here with me. I could feel it now, an immense power unfolding and drawing strength as the last of the light seeped out of the sky.
Terror beat furiously within me, radiating to my very core. Mama Akosua had been right. I shouldn’t have come here. I was in danger, I...
Intoxicating dizziness washed over me again and although I tried to fight against its pull it drew me in, causing me to close my eyes and sway in time to its suffocating rhythm...
And then I was standing at the kitchen door of the main house, having walked through the woods from the chapel and back to the house with no memory of the journey.

About A. D. Koboah

I am of Ghanaian descent and spent the first few years of my life in Ghana before moving to London which is where I have lived ever since. I completed an English Literature degree in 2000 and although I have always written in my spare time, I didn’t start writing full-time until a few years ago.
My first novel Dark Genesis was inspired by my thoughts on dehumanisation.

I was fascinated by the ways in which people are able to dehumanise others, the impact it has on the psyche and whether it is possible for people to find their way back from being dehumanised.

This led me to Luna and the ruins of a haunted chapel deep in the heart of Mississippi.

Synopsis from Goodreads
#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

*********************************************

I won't lie, I signed up to review this book even before reading the synopsis. You know why? Ilona Andrews. That name, in my opinion, is synonymous with excellence. This amazing writing duo can't do wrong. I know someone may be saying "Bullsh*t!", but that is probably because you have never experienced a read by Ilona Andrews. If you have, you would agree with me. Their voice in the Urban Fantasy genre is fresh and unique. You know when you are reading their books because there is nothing quite like it. They have created unforgettable worlds and even more unforgettable characters. I am happy to report that this read is no different. Pure awesomeness in the flesh, well, on paper anyway.

Let me start off by talking about the worldbuilding. In this world, magic is something you are born with. If you are born with it, you end up with wealth, power, and privilege. Our main character, Nevada, is a private investigator. She is very good at her job partly because of her magical talents no one knows about besides her family. Nevada knows when someone is lying. It is not much of a magical talent that can rival the wealthy families, but it is enough to help catch them. That is what happens when a man name Adam who is very rich and powerful goes a bit crazy. Adam allegedly burned and killed a security officer and burned his wife and kids in the process as well. Adam is a Prime pyrokinetic which means he is the highest rank. He is so powerful, he could easily melt steel. He is now on the run. Nevada, however, is forced to catch him and bring him in. Not only must she catch him, she has to catch him first before the cops do and even they are having a hard time. If she doesn't get the job done, she will lose everything her and her family worked so hard for.

I loved these characters so much. Nevada is an instant favorite. I love that even when we are given such a fantasy setting, Andrews really makes things realistic. You can see yourself in Nevada. She is a hardworking woman trying to protect and provide for her family. After her father died and her mother was injured, she became head of the family P.I. business. They are a great family too. You love them just as much as Nevada does. You feel like you know them because their is such a realistic quality to them. I absolutely love that.

Nevada is one clever woman. Even in dire situations, she is thinking ahead of the game and the smartest course of action. When we first see her in action, it is clear she saved a woman's life from her cheating husband. If she didn't have her head on straight, things would have ended much differently. Then we have Connor "Mad" Rogan. Mad Rogan is also a Prime. He is a telekinetic. He wants to get to Adam before anyone else, but Nevada is in his way. He is the ultimate badass. But I love that we see more to him in this book. The connection between him and Nevada was to die for. They needed each other and they didn't know it.

Andrews books never bore me. The writing and the characters always draw me in. I couldn't put this down. The pacing and dialogue are amazing. Ever since Kate Daniels, Andrews sense of humor is always something to look forward to and it is no different here. I found myself laughing so hard sometimes, I had to stop for a few moments to catch my breath. They do this and they do it so well. It is perfectly timed and fits the tone of the book. It just makes the book that much more enjoyable.

I could probably gush about Ilona Andrews all day. Can you really blame me? I loved this story. It was full of action and creativity. It is a world that may have fantasy, but is also based in reality (if that makes sense). The characters will put a smile on your face and have you cheering them on. This is definitely one of my favorites this year. There is a reason Ilona Andrews is on so many favorites list and this book is just another example. Highly recommended.
